I recently saw a Waldorf inspired contemplation for the week that talked about “only letting meaningful speech” leave your lips on Mondays. (Tuesday, by the way, the day of will, was an invitation to be light in deed, be kind over right, thanks to @waldorf_essentials).
"Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder." -Rumi
I first thought of all the things that I say that are not necessary. I carried the practice with me for the day, and let the morning silence linger a little longer before I ran into the day.
But then I thought about what was not said. What I think I don’t have the right to think, or is not right to say. What would not be permitted. And a great rush of thoughts came; a great deluge of frustration surfaced.
Which of course in one moment is a bummer if you are wanting to carry the wave of an idyllic moment that is easy and perfect at 6:10am. Or, perhaps the silence and the attention to unnecessary words gave rise to that which was waiting for silence, waiting for space to be seen and heard. Waiting to create something more optimal.
One of the beauties of the present moment is that we can know and access so much, but are we skimming the surface or are we delving into nourishment? I think in the silence what is waiting arises. Or if you have ever done morning pages, dumping the thought of the mind onto the form of the page and letting the deluge create space for what needs to be seen, or what needs release, yet does not need to be said, or launched upon another human. The human spirit grows through the effort of tension and the release into being. We create to grow, and we write to know our own voice.
In this August season, whether it is a book or a morning journal, I highly encourage you to take pen to paper, pause the scroll and see what is asking for attention or integration.
"We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect."
