Reindeer
I love the magic of Christmas. The tree’s sparkle. The presents waiting to please. The extra cookies and the reason to gather together. I can see this year more than others that it can send us into a tizzy – and I recently learned about the Nordic Myth of the Deer Mother, and I am obsessed with the imagery and delighted at the liberation of knowing that things are not what they seem. You can listen here.
I am certain no matter what you are celebrating the end of the year can have its way with you. Tucked amongst the eight nights and the reindeer is the quiet call of Yule, of Solstice, the longest night of the year. Honestly, I used to wonder why people even talked about what the moon was doing and the longest this and the shortest that – that was how disconnected I was to the Earth I was standing on and the undeniable connection between her and me.
It’s okay though. Turns out, just like the willingness of the Nordic Reindeer leader, the mother, is willing to dive to the depths to bring forth the light back to the herd, so is the Earth willing to work with us, and the same with our body selves. If we turn inward and listen.
Maybe it isn’t all that simple.
Maybe it is.
I guess where we put our faith makes a big difference.
Blessed Be,
Kate
