The practice of noticing is essential to living an intentional life. With all the noise — so much noise — it is a feat to hear yourself. Last year, on my birthday I wrote an amazing piece, if I say so myself, because we had an amazing day that both highlighted the peak and valley of human perception.
I pasted it below. It is about going for a walk on my birthday, right after I had bit into a cupcake that caused searing pain and would be the beginning of a year long journey reclaiming and restrengthening my teeth. The tooth that hurt was a wisdom tooth, so all in all, I can say, almost exactly a year later, I am in such a better place — on so many levels. But there was a hint given me that day that I needed to live through before I got it, and it is is this piece:
See, the story title comes from highlighting the woman parked in a pick-up truck that hid behind bureaucracy as a reason why she could not take her truck down a public trail road (affiliated with the sign on her truck) to help rescue a teenage girl with a most-likely broken ankle.
How do I know this? I tell you more in the article, but basically we stumbled upon a family and helped carry the girl out, one hobble at a time.
But listen, when that happened I still had the steering pain in my tooth and 6 days later that wisdom tooth would be pulled out. What I thought that day was telling me was that I was to step back out an be more prominent in helping others (which is basically my line of work: I help. I finally see it, I help. I have been a school teacher, a tutor, a trainer, a writer, and a healing arts practitioner. If I gave you access to my astrology chart, which if you are a longtime reader you know I won’t, I have the same star make-up of a pretty well known Indian sage who helped reform perspective and education based on sharing his words).
Anyway….when I helped that girl, it was a fabulous way to start my year. What I realize now, is that very real, sweaty and tense moment was also a metaphor for my year. I spent the next year, birthing a book, revamping my child’s education, and finally, finally, finally, truly reclaiming my vitality as a person and not only existing as a mother. There is no wrong; it was a phase and the phase changed. I helped that teenager out of a valley, and that imprint would be basically what the next year of my life would be.
You know what else was mirrored? The mother of that teenager had no idea how they were going to get out of that trail hike. They were at the bottom of a rocky hill and the girl couldn’t put pressure on her foot. Help arrived though. It was myself and I flagged down another hiker. We interlocked arms, and helped her come out and through. It is just amazing how angelic support finds us when we need it.
As I mentioned in the Whale Song post, this is not about anything wrong or having been wrong; it’s about growth. It’s about the honesty of the middle path, where we begin to look at what we have collected from our days and what we want to keep, and what we want to improve. I hinted in the Perfectionism post of where this thread is headed— to look at the idea that if we talk about the polarity in emotions or experiences something is wrong that needs to be made right. I’m offering (and personally rewiring) to Tele Darden’s invitation to go from, “familiar to optimal.”
For now, I am reading Elise Loehnen’s book about unnecessary patterning that my subconscious has picked up and I would most lovingly like to put down. I am leaning into expansiveness and working with my clients as exactly as I am. Meaning, I have learned a lot about marketing, but I have leaned more about intent and prayer. So I am going to tend the flame that has always carried me through. I help reignite the light in people’s eyes and give them a moment to believe again.
My intention here is that this will be read by one person who has help waiting in the wings, who is sitting on the precipice of a great updraft and she can feel it; she can feeeeel it, and these words let her trust it.
Thanks for reading, see you back here soon.
